  Zhongguo  Fojiao  meishu

  源于古印度而在中国发扬光大的佛教绘画、雕塑等的总称。最初随佛教从印度传入,后来逐渐发展而具有中国民族风格和特色。晋袁宏《后汉纪》称:“初,明帝梦见金人,长大,项有日月光,以问群臣。或曰:“西方有神,其名曰佛,其形长大,陛下所梦,得无是乎?”于是遣使天竺,而问其道术,遂于中国而图其形像焉。“《后汉书·西域传》的记载与此略同。《佛祖统纪》等也记其事。传蔡  于明帝永平初遣使赴大月氏,至永平十一年(公元68,一说永平九年),偕沙门迦叶摩腾、竺法兰东还洛阳,时以白马驮经及白毡裹释迦立像,因在洛阳城西雍关外,建立白马寺并在寺中壁上作千佛万骑三匝绕塔图。《释书·释老志》说:”自帝令画工图佛像,置清凉台及显节陵上。“这是中国最初自作的佛画。

  渊源和发展  中国佛教造像、画佛、造塔,最初都从印度传来。从印度现存佛教遗迹看,第一期的菩提伽耶,第二期的巴鲁特、桑奇都无佛像,只有佛座和佛的足迹,以表示佛的所在。第三期的阿摩拉瓦提已有雕刻的佛像与佛足迹,两者同时存在。到第四期的阿旃陀、犍陀罗只有佛像而无佛足迹,并刻有佛传。犍陀罗当时为中国西北月氏族移民所建贵霜王朝的国都,取希腊所遗文化而光大之,故月氏佛教美术,独具特色。传入中土首达新疆西部,今存者有拜城县克孜尔明屋壁画,绘有佛传及佛本生故事,库车县库木吐喇千佛洞,森木塞姆千佛洞等。沿丝绸之路,东来而至甘肃的,有敦煌鸣沙山莫高窟、永靖炳灵寺石窟、天水麦积山石窟;又有安西榆林石窟、山西大同云岗石窟、河南洛阳龙门石窟、四川广元石窟,以及江南摄山石窟等。全国造石窟之数不可胜计,其中碑幢之类,历世残毁颇多,但今所保存,为世界之冠。

  公元1世纪时,大月氏成立贵霜王朝,继续占领西南高附,东南罽宾,以及整个犍陀罗。地当丝绸之路的商业要冲,财力雄厚,贸易常用金币。迦腻色迦王远征中印在地他的支持下,佛教得到重要的发展。佛教经像传于中土,即自大月氏来。而中国西部佛教美术,亦以于阗、龟兹所保存者最多。敦煌、云冈驰名世界,其余朝鲜、日本等地,皆学于中国。而印度本土的大部分佛教经像美术,于9世纪后为印度教徒、穆斯林所毁,仅佛教几个大石窟较完整地保存至今。

  无论造像绘画和雕塑等,都是在中国土地上发育成长的,具有中国的民族风格。初期虽曾受有印度的影响,但同一题材、内容和表现的方法都已不同。印度的佛教壁画在阿旃陀石窟中,表现不少娱乐场面,饮酒宴谈,神通游戏,菩萨人物装饰华艳,婉娈多姿,色彩鲜明,即使降魔变这样的题材,也布置得如同演剧的场景一样,使人并无畏怖之感。反之在敦煌北魏壁画中,常常阴森可怖,画出了苦行的故事,如舍身饲虎,强盗挖自等。线条与色彩,也是粗犷而强烈,看不出柔和与可亲的感情。

  佛画  早在梁代,张僧繇即以善画佛像名世。他独出心裁,创立了“张家样”,佛像的中国化,从此有了很好的发展。其子善果和儒童也善画,并擅佛画,能传其业。善果画悉达太子纳纪图,灵嘉寺塔样;儒童画释迦会图,宝积经变图。在南北朝后期,张僧繇的影响很大,有不少学习他的画派,所谓“望其尘躅,如周孔焉”,可见声望之隆。他笔法简练,《历代名画记》说他“笔才一二,而像已应严焉,因材取之,今古独立,象人之妙,张得其肉,陆得其骨,顾得其神”。隋以前,僧繇是中国佛教绘画的一个开创者和推动者。北齐曹仲达,佛画颇亨盛名。因来自中亚的曹国,原来带有西域的作风,在中原既久,画艺渐染上中国民族风格,创立了“曹家样”,为唐代盛行的四大式样之一。它的样点是衣服紧窄,大约与印度笈多王雕刻,有同样的风格。后与吴道子结合中国传统风格所创立的“吴家样”并称。所谓“曹衣出水,吴带当风”,就是对他们概括的评语。曹画虽失传,但看到鹿野苑所藏释迦立像,衣如湿沾体上,就可想见曹画。吴画衣带宽博,飘飘欲仙,在敦煌壁画中还可看到他的画风。隋唐时期,佛画已经中国化。

  壁画  隋唐时代的壁画,今存于麦积山石窟与敦煌莫高窟。敦煌所存唐代壁画,尤为富美,色彩艳丽,人物造型,往往以当时的贵官贵嫔为范,端庄华贵,男女形貌,都甚肤丽。佛前演奏,弦管杂陈,较之阿旃陀壁画,尤或过之。敦煌莫高窟有唐代壁画与彩塑的洞窟,共207个,可分初、盛、中、晚四期。其重要的洞窟,如初唐的220窟,造于贞观十六年(642),盛唐的第335窟,造于垂拱二年(686),第130窟和第172窟,造于开元、天宝年间。中唐的112窟,晚唐的第156窟(此窟为张议潮建,窟外北壁上有写于咸通六年的《莫高窟记》等,都存有辉煌灿烂的作品,可为唐代佛教美术的代表。这些洞窟壁画,虽出于无名画家之手,但是研究它的作风,应该说是与吴道子、阎立本诸大家的作品是一致的。例如壁画中的维摩诘经变,在座前的听众,有诸王贵官,与现存的阎立本的帝王图相似。相此可以推知这些图像的画法,应有共同的渊源为当时的规范。

  唐代这些壁画,表现的题材是佛经经变故事、净土变相以及佛菩萨像等。其内容较之过去更丰富,色彩也比较绚丽,表现的境界也更扩大。当时最流行的是佛教净土信仰,因此净土变相在壁画中也表现得最多,约占228壁。其他如乐师净土变相,报恩经变相等,也往往采取净土变相作为主要的部分。

  在净土变相中,以富丽的物质现象,描绘观想的境界。如彩缓七宝楼台、香花伎乐、莲池树鸟等,将西方极乐世界装饰得非常美丽。这与出世苦行禁欲的态度,有很大的差异。其中所绘的佛、菩萨、诸天、力士等,都是健美的化身。这和唐代的社会生活、人民的爱好是完全一致的。有些佛画还点缀许多人们社会生活小景,乐观、明朗,富有情趣。

  随着佛教的绘画艺术传入中国,印度佛教的绘画理论也同时传入。南齐谢赫曾经总结绘画的艺术有“六法”,而印度也有“六支”,两者解释都不很明确,不能肯定说“六法”就是“六支”,但彼此之间互相影响的确是存在的。

  雕塑  虽有外来的影响,但了有其伟大的创造和民族风格。在新疆,有古代龟兹、高昌等洞窟的造像;在甘肃河西走廓,有敦煌莫高窟、安西榆林窟、永靖炳灵窟、天水麦积山等石窟造像;再东进有山西大同云冈、河南洛阳龙门、山西太原天龙山、河北邯郸响堂山、河南巩县石窟寺、山东云门山、江苏连云港、辽宁义县恨佛堂等大小石窟造像,蔚为盛观。在江南的有摄山石窟造像,分布既广,数目亦多。乐山大佛,尤呈伟观。从北魏到隋唐时期,中国佛教的雕塑美术,创造了很多伟大的工程。以上所记的各石窟中,亦以北魏与隋唐时代的最为精美,其中云冈与龙门的石刻,可为代表。其他全国各寺院中的金铜造像,石刻造像碑、木雕、夹  干漆造像,更不计其数。佛教对于中国的雕刻与彩塑留下很大的成绩。北魏时期的石窟造像,受外来影响,但与印度犍陀罗造像和笈多造像相比较,也各有不同的风格。至唐代而民族形式愈益成熟,它的妙相庄严,表现了中华民族的气魄与所要求的艺术标准。在甘肃的敦煌与天水麦积山,由于石质是砾岩,不便雕刻,工人匠心独运,改用彩塑。唐塑在基高窟中,焕发光彩。江南的杨惠之成为泥塑名家。自宋、元以来,各寺泥塑甚多,此亦为中国佛教美术所特有。

  藏传佛教美术  既与汉族地区佛教美术有一定的渊源关系,又受印度、尼泊尔佛教美术影响,在中国佛教美术中,独具风格。北京雍和宫、西黄寺及承德须弥福寿之庙,其殿宇、佛像等,均属藏传佛教美术系统。拉萨的布达拉宫,藏有古代流传下来的大量佛画与金铜佛像,以及刺绣与木刻的板画佛像,普遍受到信众的供养。在青海塔尔寺,每年以酥油制作酥油花礼佛,这是牧民的特殊佛教美术,在五屯,有制作佛画的传统技法,至今仍在发展。

  影响  在唐代,中国佛教美术曾流传到朝鲜和日本等地。朝鲜南部庆州石窟庵释迦如来坐像,妙相庄严;一一面观音像、四菩萨像,姿态端庄,与中国盛唐时期佛教美术极为相似。日本奈良中宫寺的菩萨像、木造彩画,支颐微笑;药师寺东院堂圣观音菩萨像,铜造镀金,修短合度;法隆寺梦殿救世观音像,木造漆箔;法隆寺五重塔文殊菩萨像,塑敷彩;东大寺释迦如来像,铜造线刻镀金;唐招提寺金堂卢舍那佛像,干漆造漆箔;各寺造像的取材和制作方法各不相同,但皆受中国唐代佛教美术风格的影响。法隆寺金堂壁画,瑰丽庄严,也与中国敦煌壁画,千古同辉。

  综观中国的佛教美术虽然曾受到印度的影响,但中国的佛教美术风格也传到印度犍陀罗等地区,对印度佛教美术的发展曾有过一定的影响。(常任侠)
