  北傳佛教之一。約于2世紀開始從中國傳入。

  初傳時期  據越南《禅苑集英》記載,195年,東漢蒼梧(今廣本梧州)學者牟子奉母流寓交趾(指今越南北部)。他“銳志于佛道”,著有《牟子理惑論》。這是佛教傳入越南北部的開始。約在255~256年間,月氏僧侶支疆梁接(畺良婁至)到達交州。3世紀末,印度僧人摩羅耆域經扶南至交州,同時到達的不有僧人丘陀羅;在交州北甯建有法雲、法雨、法雷、法電四所寺宇。

  2~3世紀,佛教已經多種途徑傳入越南。首先,由于中國中原戰亂,大批士民流寓交州,將佛教帶入;其次,南亞、西亞的移民及僧侶人海路進入交州;第叁,也可能經由緬甸、雲南進入紅河谷地。史載叁國東吳所屬交州太守士燮,“出入鳴鍾磬,備具威儀,笳箫喜歡吹,車騎滿道,人夾毂焚燒香者常有數十”。這些夾毂夢香的胡人即來自南亞、西亞或西域的僧人。

  發展過程  6世紀後,越南僧團逐漸形成。574年印度僧人毗尼多流支到達長安,7~9世紀,越南佛教傳播更廣,寺廟遍及各地。9世紀初,無言通在交州,創立新的禅派,對越南佛教的發展起了重要作用。據義淨的《大唐西域求法高僧傳》記載,唐代中國僧人到達交州弘傳佛教,或與越南僧人同往印度或南海求法取經者的人數頗多。義淨記述了運期、解脫天、窺沖、慧琰、智行、大乘燈六位越南僧侶求支取經的事迹。

  10~14世紀越南佛教興盛。佛教成爲維護封建製度的重要精神支柱。從939年吳權稱王,經過丁朝(968~979)和前黎朝(980~1009),封建國家政權主要掌握在僧侶和武將手中。國王重用僧人,賦予特權;僧人參與朝政,製定律令文書。前黎末年,國王黎龍铤在位,因僧侶權柄過重,試圖壓抑。以僧統萬行和尚爲首的僧侶集團便支持殿前指揮李公蘊,乘國王去世之機,篡奪了政權。李公蘊爲萬行之侄,建立李朝(1010~1224)後,尊萬行爲國師,以佛教爲國教。李朝各代國王大力推崇佛教,傳播禅宗佛學,各地廣造寺宇,度民爲僧,出現了百姓大半爲僧,國內到處皆寺的局面。陳朝(1225~1399)建立後,繼續推崇佛教,弘揚禅宗。

  李朝和陳朝前後400年間,有8位國王出家爲僧。尤其是陳朝前期陳太示、陳仁宗先後禅位出家,創立竹林禅派,並派遣使臣到中國求大藏經,在國內印刷佛教經典和佛像。這一時期寺院形成一股社會勢力,擁有寺田、食邑和田奴;僧侶享有多除賦稅、徭役的特權,高級僧人出入宮廷、官府,位比王侯卿相。僧團製度正式形成,組織嚴密。上有國師、僧統和僧錄,各府有教門公事。寺院林立,建築富麗堂皇。

  創立宗派  越南佛教深受中國南宗禅學的影響,屬于大乘佛教。先後創立了下述幾派:

  ①滅喜禅派。毗尼多流支(又譯“滅喜”)所創。又稱“南方派”。毗尼多流支,南天竺人,574年至長安,後隨中國禅宗叁祖僧璨,承襲中國禅宗衣缽。580年到達交州,住法雲寺,傳授禅學。他所創立的“滅喜禅宗派”傳播叁祖僧璨的“心印”思想。在圓寂前將法統傳弟子法賢。這一派系存在于580~1216年,共傳十九代。各代名僧如法順、萬行、惠生、慶喜和圓通等均受到當朝國王的重視,封爲法師、國師,被任命爲僧統。

  ②無言通禅派。唐代僧人無言通所創。又稱觀壁派。無言通從學百丈懷海禅師,820年至交州北甯建初寺,傳授禅學,創立該派,實行面壁禅觀。他承受中國南宗禅學惠能、懷讓、道一和懷海的法統,宣傳佛性無所不在和心、佛、衆生叁無差別等觀點。這一派曆經十五代,活動于820~1221年間。其中第四代祖吳真流爲丁朝、前黎朝僧統,封爲“匡越大師”。第七代的圓照禅師曾訪問中國,被稱爲“高座法師”。無言通派是越南佛教的主要宗派,越南陳朝興起的竹林禅派直接承襲其法統。

  ③草堂禅派。北宋雲門宗僧人草堂所創。亦稱雪窦明覺派。草堂爲雪窦重顯的弟子,曾至占婆弘傳佛教,後到達越南北方,受李聖宗重視,封爲國師,賜居首都昇龍(今河內)開國寺。草堂創立該派,主要傳“雪窦百則”,提倡禅淨一致,即實行禅宗的修禅與淨土宗的念佛相結合。該派活動于1009~1205年間,傳五代。其中有叁個國王、兩名太傅。

  ④竹林禅派。相傳爲陳仁宗所創。實際始于陳朝開國皇帝陳太宗。陳太宗曾受教于由中國赴越的天封禅師,又從宋朝禅師德誠參學。越南史學家陶維英則認爲這一派是由禅月禅師傳給陳太宗,後經定香長老、圓照大師,至道惠禅師(皆無言通禅宗派名僧)時分類一個支系,其中主要的一支出逍遙禅師傳給慧忠上士,再傳給調禦覺皇,即陳仁宗。陳太宗所著《課虛錄》提出“四山”之說,認爲生、老、病、死,乃四座大山,人能求佛學禅,勤行修忏,便可“超若海,渡迷津”,越過四山,解脫輪回。該書爲竹林禅派的基本著作。慧忠將禅宗要旨傳給陳仁宗。竹林禅派以陳仁宗爲初祖,他笃志禅學,即位後日理朝政,夜至宮內資福寺研習禅學。後禅位出家,在海陽東潮縣安子山花煙寺出家修行,講授禅法,正式創立竹林禅派,迹稱竹林安子禅派。自號香雲大頭陀,竹林上士,人稱調禦覺皇。著作甚多。該派承襲無言通禅派法統,以唐代禅宗五家之一臨濟宗爲主,認爲佛法亦即老子的“道”與孔子的“中庸”。宣揚佛法不離世間法。主張坐禅和采用臨濟宗的“四賓主”師徒問答方式傳道。認爲心即是佛,佛在衆人心中。陳仁宗之後,有二祖法螺,叁祖玄光,合稱“竹林叁祖”。法螺創立瓊林院,編撰佛經,著有《參禅旨要》等。玄光,狀元出身,後出家從學法螺,1317年繼承竹林派衣缽,著有《玉鞭集》等。該派因得皇室大力扶持,成爲陳朝時期越南佛教的主要派別,對越南佛教的發展影響很大。

  佛教禅宗不講究煩瑣的禮儀,不重戒律,主張坐禅修行,甚至可居家修禅,著書立說,其教理把中國和印度的佛學與儒學思想結合起來,適應越南封建階級的需要,對于知識階層也具有吸引力,因而在越南中古時期各王朝獲得廣泛發展,並對越南的哲學、文學藝術、建築、音樂等等産生深刻的影響。

  佛儒消長  14世紀以後,由于儒學的發展,儒士階層勢力上升,僧侶集團開始推動在國家政治生活中的巨大作用。陳朝末年,朝廷多次沙汰僧徒,並限製寺院僧侶勢力的發展。後黎朝(1428~1526)建立後,獨尊儒學,執行抑佛重儒政策,道教日益興起,佛教由此日趨衰落。朝廷禁止新建寺宇,將寺田、寺廟領地收歸國有,勒令不知誦經不持戒律的僧尼還俗,並以改革民俗之名,在民衆中宣傳佛教爲迷信異端。至15世紀後半葉,僧侶人數大減,通達佛教教義者寥寥無幾。從1500年起,黎氏朝廷下令只許庶民信奉佛教。從此,越南佛教便由皇室庇護的貴族化宗教轉化爲以平民信仰爲主的民間宗教。

  16~17世紀,天主教開始傳入越南。越南佛教雖不似以前興盛,但仍綿延不絕。當時,封建中央政權衰落,形成南北朝分裂割據局面,佛教有所振興。北方鄭氏王府和南方阮氏王府都曾延請中國高僧講解佛經,修建寺院。1665年,鄭王選拔國內有名佛師,爲禦用寺宇塑造幾百尊佛像,禅宗再度複興。隱居安子山的竹林禅派名僧白梅麟角將竹林叁祖的教義和淨土宗融合爲一體,在河內的婆  寺開創新教派——蓮宗。主張禅教雙運,以教爲眼,禅是佛心,以阿彌陀佛爲禅的公案,但實修上專念彌陀名號,由此而得悟平生。此外,在越南北方有中力尚拙公創立的拙公派,這一派以臨濟宗爲主,並受淨土宗影響,亦稱竹林新派。同時,還有曹洞宗的水月派。南方阮王府于1604年在順化修建了大乘佛教的寺院——天姥寺。中國僧人道明、原紹等在越南傳授禅宗佛學。原紹創建臨濟正宗的原紹禅派,造平定十塔寺,宣揚禅淨並修的教義。迄今,蓮宗在越南北方仍有一定影響,而臨濟正宗教派在南方勢力則較大。

  19世紀初,阮朝建立。阮朝初年執行保護臨濟正宗、歧視蓮宗的政策。僧綱的職位皆授給臨濟正宗派僧侶,對蓮宗僧侶限製頗多。但蓮宗派仍在北方民間活動。

  1858年後,法國殖民者入侵越南,越南佛教徒參加了愛國抗法運動。進入近代時期,越南興起佛道儒叁教合一運動。19世紀末,隨著天主教之傳播,又出現“四教一源說”。這一時期建立的高臺教則是把佛、道、儒和天主教及民間信仰糅合起來的新宗教。
