(名数)显教依法华经以地狱饿鬼畜生阿修罗人天之六凡与声闻缘觉菩萨佛之四圣为十法界,密教依理趣释经以地鬼畜人天之五凡与声缘菩权佛实佛之五圣为十法界。
(名数)华严家为分别圆融无碍之义相而立四法界,天台家为差别尘沙之事相而立十法界,对配之,即横竖之二门也(四横十竖)。十法界者:一、佛法界,自觉觉他觉行共满之境界也。二、菩萨法界,为无上菩提修六度万行之境界也。三、缘觉法界,为入涅槃修十二因缘观之境界也。四、声闻法界,为入涅槃,依佛之声教修四谛观法之境界也。五、天法界,修上品十善,兼修禅定,生于天界,受静妙之乐之境界也。六、人法界,修五戒及中品十善,受人中苦乐之境界也。七、阿修罗法界,行下品十善得通力自在之非人境界也。八、鬼法界,犯下品五逆十恶,受饥渴苦之恶鬼神境界也。九、畜生法界,犯中品五逆十恶,受吞啖杀戮苦之畜类境界也。十,地狱法界,犯上品五逆十恶,受寒热叫唤苦之最下境界也。要之感报之界分有十种不同,故谓之十法界。十法界之事经论无明说。此天台大师依经论之意而立,该收一切有情界之一种法门也。释十法界之字者,如止观五曰:“法界者三义,十数是能依,法界是所依,能所合摄故言十法界。又此十法各各因各各果,不相混滥,故言十法界。又此十法一一当体皆是法界,故言十法界。”

Each Dharma realm has its own characteristics, and its existence is attributed to the retribution of the beings. The lowest six realms (1-6) are known as the Six Paths or Six Realms. These six states of existence are subjected to birth and death, and then rebirth for many lives. The upper four realms are known as the Four Holy Realms. These four states of existence are beyond birth and death and liberated from the Samsara
