（杂语）Veśa，又作吠奢。旧作鞞舍，毗舍。天竺四姓第三商贾之族也。西域记二曰：“吠奢，旧曰毗舍，讹也。商贾也，贸迁有无，逐利远近。”玄应音义十八曰：“鞞舍，陛爰反。正言吠舍，此言坐，谓坐估也。案天竺土俗，多重宝货。此等营求积财巨亿，坐而出纳，故以名焉。”俱舍光记八曰：“吠舍此是兴事种。”
